What a useful digital COSHH register should contain

A chemical list is not automatically a COSHH assessment. Effective control connects the substance, task, exposure route, people at risk, controls, emergency arrangements and current Safety Data Sheet.

Core COSHH information

• Substance and supplier
• Hazard classification, pictograms and H-statements
• Use, quantity and storage location
• Exposure routes and people affected
• Engineering controls, procedures and PPE
• First aid, spill response and disposal
• Assessment owner, review date and status

SDS storage and version control

A new Safety Data Sheet should not silently overwrite the previous version. Retaining the old SDS, upload date and replacement history helps explain which information supported an earlier decision.

Link substances to real work

COSHH records are more valuable when linked to relevant tasks, risk assessments, sites and training. Managers can then identify where the substance is used and whether controls remain suitable.
